KNOTS OF TIME

The initial idea for this project came from artist Kimsooja’s idea that
time and cloth are inextricably connected. Then, I turned to Raul de Nieves’
colorful sculptures for aesthetic inspiration. I learned that the artist had to
move from Mexico to the US with absolutely no personal belongings and
start a completely new life at the age of 6. I thought about having to rebuild
and collect everything from scratch, which terrified me. After talking about
the piece, I want to keep thinking about memorials and shrines.

People become part of the
artwork, and I loved watching that. I appreciated Annabelle’s observation that
many people’s first instinct was to untangle the piece. I liked the
interpretation of falling pieces in relation to forgetting things that happened
over time. I also liked Jules’ interpretation of each piece of textile as
representing a day in someone’s lifetime. I like that Gordon mentioned they
know exactly how the piece was made and that me making it becomes part of
the work. From other classmates’ critiques, I learned that sometimes the
sculpture is not the most important part of the conversation and that a piece
of art can be a great tool to have important conversations.
